Gold Country Activities

Rushing whitewater and calm swimming holes, hiking and biking trails, downhill and ski touring, and much more. It all awaits you within minutes of The Outside Inn.

The Outside Inn is located at the doorstep of the Tahoe National Forest. Six major river canyons and the ski resorts of Lake Tahoe are all within an hour's drive from Nevada City. No matter what the season, Nevada County offers plenty to do. Attractions such as fall colors, winter sports, spring wildflower hikes, kayaking, and mountain biking add to the list of traditional summertime activities.

The South Yuba River just minutes from the Outside Inn.The Yuba watershed, encompassing the North, Middle, and South Forks of the Yuba River is approximately 1300 sqaure miles of accessible, yet unspoiled wilderness. Our local favorite is the South Yuba River. During the rainy season, the South Yuba River has long been a special playground for expert kayakers, wildflower enthusiasts, and mountain bikers.

In the summer the river provides swimmers with secluded waterfalls, emerald green swimming holes, and large granite rocks for sun bathing. Mountain bikers and hikers enjoy trails that wind in and around the canyon with access to clean refreshing river pools for cooling off. The Pioneer Trail and the South Yuba Trail will soon be linked to the Pacific Crest Trail, a 2665 mile path from Mexico to Canada.

Springtime in the Yuba River canyonThe Yuba-Donner Scenic Byway, a 160 mile drive through some of Northern California's most beautiful and historic territory, is ideal for those more inclined to drive.

History buffs can visit the covered bridge at Bridgeport, the village of Rough and Ready, the interpretive state historic parks at the Empire Mine near Grass Valley and Malakoff Diggins northest of Nevada City.

The brilliant autumn colors of Nevada City and Grass Valley have been called some of the most spectacular in the west. The colors begin in early October and usually last until Thanksgiving.

During the winter it's a short drive to the snow. The Donner Summit ski resorts are less than an hour's drive away, but the Outside Inn is comfortably below the snow zone in Nevada City at 2500 foot elevation. Groomed cross country ski trails are available at Royal Gorge, and for back country skiers, many of the high country hiking trails are commonly trekked. Guided snowshoe and back country ski tours are available upon request.

We will be happy to provide you with tour guides year round, or free maps and information to do it on your own.
