Soroptimist Garden Tour plus giveaway

The Soroptimist Garden Tour will be taking place this coming weekend (May 19th and 20th) throughout Nevada County, for a map click here. Take a tour of some amazing gardens either Saturday or Sunday between 10am and 4pm and help support the non-profit Soroptimist International organization. Tickets available at the garden gates or stop by one of the many local vendors and save $5 when you purchase your ticket in advance. Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply is not only selling tickets, but they have generously donated an amazing giveaway basket for one lucky Outside Inn blog reader. Bike & Hike Event

The 2012 Bike & Hike Event took place today at Seven Hills School. The fundraiser for the Nevada City Schools had something for everyone; road rides, hikes, obstacle courses, tricycle races, silent auction, taco lunch, plus more. Lots of fun was had by bike enthusiasts of all ages. Many thanks to the number of local businesses and volunteers who helped together the event, the local schools appreciate the support.

Teddy Bear Convention

The Teddy Bear Convention has returned to Nevada City with a 2 1/2 day event based at the Elks Lodge. This year’s theme is the “Enchanted Forest.” For a schedule of events click here. Photos of bears, antiques and dragons from Unicorns & Dragons, Fool’s Gold Bears and Diana’s Merry Bears, to name a few. Bring a can of food for the Nevada County Food Bank today or tomorrow for $1 off your addmission price. If you bring a child make sure to look for Little Red Riding Hood, she’s got a special treat for all guests under the age of 12.

We are surounded by white water living here in Nevada City. Here is what we landlubbers are missing on the South Fork of the Yuba and the North Fork of the American Rivers.

Peggy & Bob Wright describe their ice cream as “Homemade artisans ice cream, made with local and organic ingredients, when possible.” If you’re not in the mood for ice cream try a scoop of gelato, a fresh baked cookie or a latte. Buttermilk Bend Trail, Bridgeport

The wildflowers are in season at Bridgeport on the South Yuba River. Pack a picnic and head to Buttermilk Bend Trail, the level trail follows the river for 1.2 miles and is perfect for all ages and abilities. Guided walks every Saturday and Sunday at 11am through mid May. If you’re feeling ambitious ride your bike to Bridgeport.

Sugar Loaf Mountain

Want to get 365 degree views of downtown Nevada City? Take a short walk up to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Bring a picnic and sit and enjoy the views. The trail starts at the top of Coyote Street on the left hand side and takes approximately 10-15 minutes to walk to the top.

Strawberry Shortcake

Wendy Van Wagner’s In the Kitchen offers hands on cooking class, for all ages. When I asked her for her favorite spring time receipe she replied with, “Did you know that Strawberry Shortcake is really one of the EASIEST desserts to make? The only real cooking/baking is making the shortcakes! The rest is sliced strawberries and whipping cream! I have already made this dessert 3 times for dinner parties and guests, most recently for our annual Easter Sunday Lunch out on the land where we live. I always make Alice water’s recipe, the shortcakes are exceptionally crumbly and delicate. Make sure that you get the ripest strawberries you can find and for an extra special addition to the whipped cream, I add a splash of rose water before whipping!” For a complete recipe for this yummy dessert check out the Ezra Pound Cake blog post. Hirschman Trail

The opening cermony for Hirschman’s Trial is April 21st, 9am. I’ve complied a few of my favorite photos from the last year. If you need directions the Outside Inn office has a free map of the trail. It’s become a favorite of our guests, due to the proximitiy to town. If you’d don’t make it out for the ribbon cutting ceremony, definitely check out the trail, either on foot, with your bike or your fishing pole, it’s a great little spot.

I’m super excited to announce our winner of the web design and photo shoot contest is Sheila Cameron. She has won a prize package by John Burnett. When I asked Sheila her thoughts on winning she replied with the following, ”Thank you so much for running this wonderful contest. Spring at Ananda

This weekend and possibly next, Ananda is having their Spring celebration at the Crystal Hermitage, which they describe as the “spiritual heart of Ananda”. The tulips are just starting to bloom and with a few more days of sunshine they will be truly spectacular. It is a wonderful place to just be, with so much natural beauty as well as the magnificent upper and lower gardens. They also offered fresh baked treats (yummy scones!) and live music by Ananda musicians. It is definitely a lovely place to experience springtime! For additional photos please click here.

Sheila Cameron is a local artist, writer, blogger and mother. She knows just enough about building websites to be a danger to herself and greatly needs some outside professional help. Don’t let her many websites fool you that she doesn’t need this. Websites don’t build themselves and her little girls are terrible at content management and SEO. The Food Love Project is a Living Lands Agrarian Network farm. It is the first LLAN farm on a public space that is dedicated to education. Its mission is nutrition education, food security, and community involvement in growing, harvesting, eating, and celebrating fresh food. Amanda Thibodeau established it in 2010 in partnership with the Bear Yuba Land Trust. Since then over 800 children and countless volunteers have visited the site.
